Reporting a Change of Address on Your ARC
Moved to a new place? Here's how to legally update your address on your Alien Registration Card in Korea.
The 14-Day Rule
Under the Immigration Act, you must report a change of address within 14 days of moving. Failing to do so can result in a fine of up to 100,000 KRW.
This applies even if you are moving within the same district (구, gu). The address on your ARC must match your actual place of residence at all times.
Option 1: Visit the Local Community Center (주민센터)
This is the most common method. Go to the 주민센터 (Jumin Center) in your new neighborhood.
What to bring: • Your passport • Your ARC (Alien Registration Card) • Your new lease contract or proof of residence (e.g., utility bill, landlord confirmation)
The process takes about 10–15 minutes. You will fill out a 전입신고서 (Move-in Report Form) and your ARC will be updated. You will also receive 확정일자 here, which protects your deposit legally.
Option 2: Online via Government24 (정부24)
If you have a Korean digital certificate (공동인증서 or 금융인증서), you can report your address change online at www.gov.kr.
Navigate to: 민원 서비스 → 전입신고
This is the most convenient option if you have the certificate. However, getting the digital certificate for the first time usually requires a bank visit in person, so new arrivals often do the first report in person.
Option 3: Immigration Office Visit
If your ARC was issued by a specific immigration office, you may need to return there for a full ARC re-issue (not just an address update). This is rare — most address changes can be done at the community center.
Check with your local 출입국관리사무소 (Immigration Office) if you are unsure. You can also call the immigration helpline: 1345 (available in English).
What Happens If You Don't Report?
Beyond the fine, failing to register your new address has practical consequences:
• Mail and official documents (tax notices, bank statements) go to your old address • Your 전입신고 and 확정일자 are not updated, leaving your deposit legally unprotected at the new address • Some employers or government agencies may have mismatched records • It could complicate future visa renewals or ARC extensions
The process is quick and free — there is no reason to skip it.
