Navigation

🗺️ Naver Maps (네이버 지도) The essential navigation app for Korea. Google Maps is often inaccurate here due to government map data restrictions. Naver Maps shows real-time bus and subway routes, walking directions, estimated travel times, taxi fares, and even building floor plans for large complexes. Available in English.

🚇 Kakao Metro (카카오 지하철) The best app specifically for the Seoul Metro. Shows real-time train arrivals, the least crowded car position, which exit to take for your destination, and full multi-line transfer routes. A must-have if you use the subway regularly.

🚌 Kakao Bus (카카오버스) Real-time tracking for every bus route in Korea. Shows exactly where your bus is right now, how many stops until it arrives, and how crowded it is. Works across Seoul and most other major cities.

Communication & Daily Life

💬 KakaoTalk (카카오톡) Korea's dominant messaging app — think of it as Korea's WhatsApp, but more integrated into daily life. Almost everyone in Korea uses it. You will need it to communicate with landlords, employers, and friends. Many businesses also use KakaoTalk for customer service. Download it before you arrive.

🏦 Toss (토스) Korea's most popular fintech app. Once you have a Korean bank account, Toss lets you transfer money instantly for free, check all your accounts in one place, split bills, and pay at stores. The interface is clean and partially supports English.

💳 KakaoPay / Samsung Pay Mobile payment apps widely accepted across Korea. KakaoPay links to your Korean bank account; Samsung Pay works with compatible cards. Very useful since many smaller shops prefer card payments over cash.

Food & Shopping

🛵 Baemin (배달의민족) Korea's largest food delivery app. English version available — search "Baemin" in the App Store. Covers restaurants across Korea, including many that don't have English menus. Delivery is typically 15–30 minutes and fees are low (2,000–3,000 KRW).

🛒 Coupang (쿠팡) Korea's Amazon equivalent. Order groceries, household goods, electronics, and almost anything else. Rocket Delivery (로켓배송) delivers within hours or by the next morning for free on orders over 19,800 KRW. The app is Korean-only, but it becomes easy to navigate after a few tries.

🍱 Yogiyo (요기요) The second-largest food delivery app. Good for areas where Baemin coverage is limited. Similar interface and pricing.

Health & Safety

🏥 응급의료정보제공 (1339) Official government emergency medical app. Find the nearest hospital or pharmacy open right now, including on holidays and late at night. Also available as a phone service: call 1339 for emergency medical guidance in Korean.

💊 Naver or Kakao Pharmacy Search Search 약국 (yakguk) in Naver Maps to find the nearest open pharmacy. Many are open until 9–10 PM. Night pharmacies (야간 약국) are designated in each district and open until midnight or 24 hours.

🚨 Emergency Numbers • 119 — Fire & ambulance • 112 — Police • 110 — Government services helpline (some English support) • 1345 — Immigration helpline (English available)

Language & Translation

📖 Papago (파파고) Naver's translation app, built specifically for Korean. Significantly more accurate than Google Translate for Korean. Features include text translation, camera translation (point at menus or signs), voice translation, and conversation mode. A must-have for navigating daily Korean life.

🔤 Naver Dictionary (네이버 사전) The go-to dictionary app in Korea. Better than Google for Korean definitions, example sentences, and pronunciation. Also includes TOPIK vocabulary tools if you are studying Korean.

Tip: Screenshot menus or signs and use Papago's image translation feature — it works remarkably well for restaurant menus, instruction manuals, and official documents.
